Notes for John Wiley McDearmon: McDearmon Notes

We do not have much information on Willie McDearmon or his father Bryant McDearmon but based upon hear say and 1850 Tennessee Census, we think his wife’s name was Catherine ?. Apparently he came from Virginia and his wife from North Carolina and they moved to or may have been married in Tennessee where John Thomas and the other children were born.

John Thomas McDearmon, son of Willie, lived in Heber Springs Arkansas, and served in the Civil War with the south. After the war he returned to Heber Springs Arkansas. In later years he and wife Armenta Matilda Gray moved to Quinlan Texas where John passed away. Based upon the story by John Wiley McDearmon, his father died from cancer. After John Thomas died, his widow moved back to Arkansas and lived with John Wiley & Rose McDearmon in Heber Springs Arkansas until her death, the year I was born, 1927.

April 22, 1899 John Wiley recieved a land grant of 160 acres land located near  Heber Springs AR This land grant issued in Harrison County Ar. About 1920 he purchased 160 acres located about 8 miles south of Heber Springs. remember  he said it cost about $2900.00 which included house, barn and most of the land cleared ready to farm. This parcel of land also contained several acres of timber. About 1927 he built a house and barn on the East 80 acres and my father, Howard Crosby and mother, Emily Alberta (McDearmon) Crosby, moved into the new house just after I was born.. During the great depression John lost all 160 acres to foreclosure but continued to live there and rent the property on a share crop basis for three or four years. I remember us moving from the new house when I was seven years old.

John Wiley told me that he finished the second grade of school then had to go to work to help support the family. We do not know where he and Rose met but think they may have married in Heber Springs Arkansas. When I was only four or five years old my grandfather John Wiley and son Edward Ray would always go into town, Heber Springs, on Saturday and many times would take me with them. The only transportation was a wagon and pair of mules. We would park the wagon on or near main street around the county court house and tie the mules to the wagon while we shopped. These were the days when a nickel would buy a double dip ice cream cone or a big hamburger. One nickel was a lot of money for me to spend because times were very bad and this was during the great depression. There are many great stories to tell on Grandpa John but only room for one here. He had two mules named Mike and Jim and when you would hit one of them with the whip the mule would lunge forward and pass gas with a loud sound. Many times when I was with him in town, he would drive the team of mules up main street near a crowd of people and swat the mule with his whip so all could hear the loud sound of passing gas coming from the mule. Then he would laugh with great gusto saying his mules never had good manners and then we would head for home. True story and there were many more just as good.

It was always a big deal to me when I could go and spend the night with Grandpa John Wiley & Grandma Rose. At that time I was the only grandchild so they rolled out their best for me. He would tell me stories of long ago which were so very interesting. Sometimes my uncle Edward Rae would take me rabbit hunting which I always looked forward to. They always had plenty of food which was grown on the farm, especially the peanuts, roasted in an oven. We would sit around a pot belly wood stove in the cold winter months and eat those roasted peanuts.

Fall was a great time of the year when my parents and Grandpa John Wiley would kill hogs for our winter meat supply. I always wanted the bladder from the hogs to blowup and make them into balloons. My grandma and mother would make lie soap from the fat and cook the skin for pork rinds which they made into crackling bread. Crackling bread is corn bread with pork rinds crushed or ground and mixed in the bread, very good I might add. They cooked the fat, skin and other byproducts in a large wash kettle over a wood fire usually out in the front yard. Upon my parents death I received their wash kettle, the one they and my grandparents actually used for hog killing and heating water for washing their cloths. They always gave the neighbors some fresh pork. The meat for most part was packed in salt or cured in sugar with other ingredients for winter use. Bacon sides, hams and shoulders were usually smoked with Hickory wood which made them so tasty. This kettle is being passed on to my son Mark and then to his children, Emily, Susan, Joseph or Stephen. Joseph and Stephen are my only grandsons to carry on the Crosby name for my side of the family tree.

Most of the deceased McDearmon family is buried in Cross Roads Cemetery located about half way between Heber Springs and Rose Bud Arkansas, a short distance off Highway 5, now called Hopewell, AR.

These notes were compiled by a grandson of John Wiley McDearmon and son of Emily Alberta (McDearmon) and Howard L Crosby.

Generation 5

12. EMILY ALBERTA5 MCDEARMON (John Wiley4, John Thomas3, Willie2, Bryant1) was born on 25 Jul 1904 in Heber SPRINGS Ar. She died on 15 Aug 1991 in LA PORTE, INDIANA. She married Howard Lee Crosby (son of ALANSON B. “LANCE” CROSBY and LUCINDA CLAYTON) on 03 Jan 1926 in Heber SPRINGS Ar. He was born on 06 Jul 1899 in Heber Springs ARKANSAS. He died on 16 Apr 1983 in LA PORTE, INDIANA.

Notes for Howard Lee Crosby:

Born in Heber Springs Arkansas 1899, Howard’s mother died when he was age three and his father died when he was age seven. After his mother and father died he moved with his half sister, Sarah ( Sally) Fortner and her husband John Fortner and lived there until he left to live with a family by the name of Martin. Howard finished the 2nd grade in school then quit to help earn a living. Apparently he and John never got along too well so Howard told them one day he was going to the store to pickup a loaf of bread and never returned. Sometime later his half brother saw Howard and asked if he got lost going to the store or was he still looking for it? Later he was drafted into the army during world war 1 but was discharged a few days later when the war ended. From this time until 1926 he hitched rides on trains and traveled to the state of Kansas and other mid western states where he worked in the corn and wheat fields. 1926 he married Emily Alberta McDearmon in Heber Springs Arkansas.

For several years he rented land, share crop type farming, in and around Heber Springs Arkansas. About 1941 or 42 he purchased 80 acres of land for $400.00, built a 2 room house on it and moved the family into it. Some time later he purchased 40 acres south of the home place for one bale of cotton, (about $50.00 value) then 29 acres on Big creek about 3 miles east of the home place and last he purchased 40 acres just across the road east of the home place. Making a living was tough farming in Arkansas and lots of hard work for very little return. He mainly grew cotton, hay and corn, also raised vegetables and sold them on the street and door to door in Heber Springs. Howard was well liked by his neighbors and constantly being kidded about many things. The story is that his cotton field had lots of grass in it so some wise neighbor posted a sign in his field, KEEP OFF THE GRASS THERE’S COTTON UNDER IT. Another story which we know is true. Howard sold a hunting dog to a neighbor named Arlie Ward and the dog had running fits from distemper. At time of purchase Arlie asked Howard if the dog had fits. Howard told him, oh yes it has one Now and Then. After having the dog a few days Arlie saw Howard and complained saying you told me the dog only had a fit now and then. Howard said yes I told you the truth, the dog has a fit Now and Then when that one is over he has another, so now and then is correct. Howard was plowing his cotton field which was next to the road and he was wearing his usual attire, overalls, when a sand streaker, long lizzard about 10 inches long including tail, ran up inside his overall leg. He pealed out of his overalls standing there in his birthday suit when some neighbors came by. The neighbors asked if he was too hot he said no just killing lizards. There were many good jokes about Howard, some true and others fiction. Back in the mid to late 1930 it was not uncommon to borrow about $75 from the bank for seed, fertilizer, and food to make a crop. Some times the total crop would not return much more than the borrowed amount, especially if being grown on rented land where the landlord got 1/3 of the crop for rent. Needless to say these were trying times for all.

After world war 2 ended farming became a no win situation for most small farmers so Howard held an auction and sold all farm equipment, keeping his 189 acres of land and moved the family to Michigan City Indiana where he worked on the new toll road being built from Chicago, to the east coast. This was about 1950 or 1951. He was called the old man with the boy, his son ( Harold), by the construction company and they liked his work. Many times the foreman would ask for him and Harold to do certain jobs because they worked well and without close supervision.

From a financial standpoint things got much better. He purchased a small house with 4 acres of land in LaPorte, Indiana and paid it off in full in a few years. The toll road was completed and Howard took a job as night watchman at one of the large plants in Michigan City.

He began attending church in his latter years with his granddaughter Robin whom he called ROB. He did make one change, he wore pants to church instead of overalls, one Sunday he forgot to wear his belt and as they were leaving the church his pants fell down around his ankles with people all around, he yelled out, “hold on ROB I’ve lost my britches”

He retired and later developed some medical problems, stroke, diabetes and other. He died in 1983 at his home in Laporte Indiana from an apparent heart attack or stroke. He was a funny dry humor man.

Notes for William Clay “Bill” Crosby:

Started school at age 6, in a small 2 room grade School, Cleburne County, Piney Township, located about 7 or 8 miles south of Heber Springs Arkansas on highway # 5. At age 7 the family moved to the Sam Bradford farm located near Little Red River about 4 or 5 miles east of Heber Springs. Shortly after moving to this farm their house burned and the family moved in temporally with a neighbor, Ed Bedwell. The neighbors gave the family furniture, bedding and other needed items. The sad part was that the neighbors didn’t have much to give but they did what they could.

The family then rented a small house from Will Biddle, about one mile east of the Bradford farm and his father, Howard Crosby continued to farm as a share cropper on the Bradford place. After one year the family then moved another mile east to the Louis Adams farm, about one mile west of Libby. Libby was nothing more than a commercial rock crusher which employed about 6 men. The family stayed there only one year. During these two years on Red River William attended a one room log cabin school house known as[ Lick Skillet ] ( Mt Zion ) was the formal name.

The family then moved back to the top of the mountain when William was 9 years old and Harold Leon, born on the Adams farm was one year old. They moved to the Hugh and Anny Mae Hannah farm located on route #1 about 1 mile east of highway 5 and Darcy school. William returned to Darcy school and finished the 8th grade then started high school at Rose Bud High, located about 7 miles south of Darcy school. Times were very tough in those years and he had to pick cotton to buy school clothes and save every penny possible to purchase school books. During grade school years he and most other children would go bare foot as long as possible into the fall months to save their shoes for cold winter times. A pair of shoes was about $1.95 but no one had the money and it was very hard to come by. His mother used flour sacks to make underwear and work shirts. A company would market the flour in percale cloth, beautiful patterns, which looked great and made nice clothes. His dad would also cut firewood and deliver by mules and wagon into town to buy shoes and other family needs. When William was about 7 to 9 years old he would hoe corn and cotton for anyone who would hire him for 50 cents a day, sunup to sundown. The going price for an adult was one dollar ($1.00 ) per day.

After finishing the 10th grade at Rose Bud AR, William left home 1944 at age 17 and went to Memphis TN. He was so happy to leave the farm and bad times which he had experienced in Arkansas. A neighbor loaned him $12.00 to buy some clothes and train fare to Memphis. The money ran out but not before he landed his first job, he still had to send for more money from his neighbor to carry him to his first pay day. First job was with Rail Way Express as a clerk then Firestone Tire and Rubber Co as a truck tire builder. Both jobs were either swing or graveyard shifts. While working nights in Memphis he attended high school during the day.

Left Memphis 1946 and moved to Portland Oregon where he harvested walnuts and filberts then found a job as tree faller and logging employee in various camps in and near Newberg Oregon and other nearby areas. 1949 moved back to Portland Oregon where he worked as insurance salesman, custom tailored clothing sales, both women and men, and various other sales jobs. He also worked as a radio announcer and disk jockey in Vancouver WA. During and in between these sales jobs he also worked as a meat cutter for Safeway Stores. One huge highlight of his career was a visit to the Grand Ole Opry backstage in Nashville TN in 1952 where he personally met many famous country musicians and was a guest on the radio station WSM where the Grand Ole Opry is broadcast from.

He remained at the radio station and fronted his own dance band playing dance halls in Oregon and Washington until 1953 when he was inducted into the U S Army as a Chief Food Technician and served in and around Portland Or until 1955 when he received an honorable discharge. After discharge from the Army he went to work for U S Dept Of Agriculture as a plant grader of Eggs, Poultry, Turkeys and egg products in Portland Or then was transferred to Salem Oregon then on to Petaluma, Ca where he stayed only 6 months and then to Los Angeles, Ca as a terminal market grader in 1959. On the GI Bill education program he took electronic engineering training but never really worked at it other than to service radios and television sets as a part time endeavor. His promotions with the USDA came fast so he never really worked in the field of engineering.

About 1962 was promoted to Assistant Federal State Supervisor then to Federal State Supervisor about 1964. In this position he supervised plant graders in southern California and the state of Arizona. 1971 was promoted to supervisor of all California and Arizona and transferred to Sacramento Ca. In this position he supervised about 250 employees, federal, state and county personnel. 1979 was transferred to the Regional Office located in Modesto Ca where he remained until retirement from Federal Service in 1983.

1984 purchased a small stock brokerage office in Sacramento Ca, increased it’s size to about 45 brokers and ran it until 1990 then sold it to one of his co workers. he started buying real estate as an investment in 1979 and bought and sold several pieces of property. He owned several parcels of land in the Sierra foot hills which he sub divided and sold. During the year of 1996 he sold 7 of his rental houses to one buyer. William received some land in Arkansas from his parents estate then purchased more from his brother for a total of 80 acres. Natural gas was later discovered on this land and at present there are 2 deep wells on the property. He continued to live in Sacramento California after retirement. The story goes that he retired 3 times but it’s doubtful if he ever really retired. For years he has been investing in the stock market and has been very successful in that venture. He became very interested in genealogy and did much work in collecting information on his and his wife’s families plus he designed a web site and posted all his genealogy data for the world to see and enjoy. He was a member of the IAFP, International Association Of Financial Planning and served on the Board of Directors for a few years as Vice President. He also became interested in making wine and beer and served on the Board of Directors as Vice President of The Sacramento Wine Makers Assn. One year he took 2nd place in the state fair competition and his wife’s wine took 1st place the same year. With all his hobbies it’s really hard to figure out how he had time to work a full time job.

William had a deep love for boats and the water, especially the ocean. He had owned several sail and power boats over the years, even built a V bottom plywood boat while living in Portland Or. He owned several sail and power boats, 26 foot sail, 21 foot power, 28 foot power, 30 foot sail, 43 foot motor sailer, 24 foot power and a 18 foot fishing boat. His first sail boat, a 26 foot Columbia which he and his family sailed in the ocean out of Long Beach, Ca in the mid 1960’s

He was advised in 2000 that he had developed prostate cancer and was treated with external beam radiation which at first appeared to correct the problem. 2001 he suffered several small heart attacks and had open heart surgery performed, quad bypass which was very successful. 2007 another biopsy confirmed that the prostate cancer had returned and was treated with a rather new and somewhat experimental method known as the freeze treatment. The prostate gland is injected by way of many fine needles with a freeze treatment similar to that of wart remover known as Compound W but not exactly the same. So far that seems to be doing a better job compared to external radiation.

After the health problems improved he began collecting musical instruments as a hobby and has about 100 bass and regular guitars currently in the collection. At age 83 returned to playing bass guitar at a few free shows with a musician friend at local rest homes for the patients. The joke was that he was older than many of the patients which they were entertaining in these homes. Another hobby of his love is electronics and he has assembled over 200 desktop computers from the ground up. The story is that Bill has a computer in every room in his house, even the bathrooms, just a joke but he really does have about 4 up and running in his home. Many of these computers were shipped to the Philippines to the children and friends of his girlfriend. The children sat up what is called Computer Cafes where many people who cannot afford a computer would come to the cafe to play games, go on line and use the computers by paying a small fee to the owner. This has become a rather large business in the Philippines. Building computers was not for profit, in fact many of them cost him more money than what he was actually reimbursed, he did it for the love of it and to help less fortunate people.

As of 5/17/2012 he has 5 children living, 1 dead, 13 grandchildren living plus 3 dead, 16 great-grandchildren living. At age 85 still appears to be in good health for his age. He personally takes care of his 3/4 acre residence which has about 1/2 acre in orchard. His son Mark tells him to stay off ladders but the old cute just appears to turn down his hearing aid, that is a joke, he doesn’t wear a hearing aid and doesn’t wear eye glasses while driving his car, he does however use glasses for reading fine print and computer work and of course he uses glasses when drinking good wine which he also enjoys.

Notes for HAROLD LEON CROSBY: Notes for Harold Leon Crosby

Born April 23, 1935, to Howard Lee and Emily (Bertie) Crosby in Heber Springs, Arkansas, while they were share cropping, on the Louis Adams farm, about one mile from Libby, on Little Red River. When he was one year old, they moved to Hugh and Anne Mae Hannah farm, seven miles south of Heber Springs on highway #5 and about a mile east of Darcy School. Lived there until 1941 when Howard purchased 80 acres of woodland about 1/2 mile south of the Hannah place and they moved into a 2 room house, which Howard and Hugh Hannah built.

Harold started school at Darcy and continued there through the 6th grade. Darcy was a two room school with one room though the 4th and the other through the 8th, and Harold being somewhat mischievous caused the teacher problems, but still had his assignments completed. When in the 4th grade, the teacher decided to promote him to the 5th grade, (probably to get rid of him) one month before the school year ended and was promoted conditionally to the 6th grade at the end of the semester. In the 7th grade, started to Rosebud High School and continued there until graduation, 2 weeks after he was seventeen.

Those years were not easy years for anyone on the farm and possible worse for the Crosbys because most of the land was still timberland. Howard rented some land from neighbors to farm. In the winter He and Bill, Harolds older brother, would cut trees and clear the land for farming. When Harold was 9 years old Bill moved to Memphis TN and Howard needed someone to help with the plowing, cutting wood for sale, or whatever and Harold was elected.

.During these years, Howard purchased another 110 acres of land, some was cleared, so they did not need to rent, or clear any more land, however, there was still plenty of stumps to contend with. When he was about 12 years old Howard assigned him to cutting sprouts that grew on the side of stumps. The field was about 13 or 14 acres and by the time he got to the back side , he had to start over. He told Howard that he hated cutting those bushes and Howard said, dont feel bad about cutting them down because we have plenty of them.

Things continued to get worse for the small farmers, and there were no decent paying jobs for anyone without special skills. So in the spring of 1952, Howard moved to Otis, Indiana, near Michigan City, and began working in Westville, as a construction laborer on the Beatty Memorial Hospital. He came back in June, of 1952 for Bertie, Harold and Harry, who was 5 years old. By then, Harold had graduated and all the strawberries were picked and sold.

At age 17, with some help from his Dad and friends, joined the union and started working in Westville, as a construction laborer. Things were much better in Indiana, and Harold and his Dad were able to pay off the money owed on the farm and the truck within that first year. He continued working as a laborer for 5 years until things got slow in construction. During this 5 year span he worked 2 years on the Indiana Toll Road, everyone were told that when the bond holders were paid, it would become a freeway, over fifty years later its still a toll road.

Harold became interested in playing guitar about the age of 12 and played for a few square dances in Arkansas and continued playing with a three or four piece band in bars, clubs and weddings through out North West Indiana area for about 18 years. He played rhythm guitar and bass. He also did most of the vocals.

In 1957, started working for the Kroger Co. as an apprentice meat cutter, continued for 4 years and became assistant manager, but had to quit because sinus infections, it also interfered with the singing. He married Shirley Volk in 1957 and moved to Michigan City, had a son Ronald Lee in 1958, a daughter, Robin Lynn in 1960.

1961 he started working at the Budd Co, in Gary, Indiana as a metal finisher, but was laid off many times during those early years. During one of these layoffs, he was hired to mix mortar and carry block, by the husband of his wife’s friend, who owned a small construction company. Harold started laying a few blocks and after a short time was told that he should get tools and start laying block instead of labor work. This small company did carpentry, roofing, cement finishing, just about everything in residential building, so he gained much experience on that part time job, and could work week-ends or any time he was laid off from The Budd Co. By 1965, he had gained enough knowledge to build his first house, so with enough money to purchase a lot, he was able to get a construction loan and with the help of friends and family, he started this brick ranch house, which took about one year to construct. Lived there for 10 years and sold it.

During these years he contracted several brick and block jobs. Harold then constructed a 4 bedroom brick tri-level home in 1976 with one helper who had an injury that prevented him from climbing and help from his son. He was able to finish everything inside the house in about 4 months and moved the family in. The exterior brick was completed after they moved in which was before December. Everything was done by Harold and his helpers without any contractors, except for excavating and the septic system.

Generation 6 (con’t)

Continued working at the Budd Co. until 1980, when the plant closed. After 1 year of building fireplaces, buying/rebuilding automobiles, started work for JayMar Ruby, manufacturer of Sansabelt slacks, in the maintenance dept. After one and half years was promoted to maintenance manager and remained in that position until retirement in 2000.

During the 80s Harold purchased a house that had been damaged by fire, re-built it, rented it out for a few years, later sold it to his son, Also in 1989 and the early 90s bought 5 rental properties, in need of repair and inherited his Mother and Fathers house, This kept him and his wife busy even after retirement. The properties became a problem when he was away in the R. V. for three months every winter, especially after the death of his son, so he decided to dispose of the properties one or two per year until the last one was sold in 06.

Notes for HARRY LYN CROSBY: Arkansas

Harry Lyn Crosby, one of four children of Howard Lee Crosby and Emily Alberta Crosby, was born July 2, 1947 in Heber Springs, Arkansas.

Howard and Emily (called Bertie by most people) farmed in the Hopewell, Arkansas area, raising mainly cotton and strawberries as cash crops: and using mules to work the ground.

Making, a living as a farmer in Arkansas was no easy life. Most people, I guess, really didn’t make a living at it; they just got by from one year to another by hard work, bank loans, and refusing to give up. Maybe it had something to do with not knowing, or wanting to know, there might be something better at least easier somewhere else. Maybe they just didn’t want to leave friends and family.

I was too young to remember much about those days, but I do remember my folks out in the fields hoeing, planting, or picking cotton, or working the strawberry patch. I remember my mother boiling water in a big black kettle behind the house, over an open fire, to wash clothes, and my dad and brother, Harold, cutting firewood with an ax and crosscut saw. I remember, too, riding in the wagon behind Dad’s two mules ” Net and Major, I think Dad called them” to Jimmy Young’s store a few miles down the dirt road.

I didn’t  have a hard life there, because I wasn’t old enough to do the endless work that my parents and brothers had to do. Harold was still home, and Bill had moved out of state to the west coast.

Although never easy, by the early 1950’s making a living even a meager one this way had become almost impossible, and many farmers in the area were leaving to find work in other states. In 1952, that’s what Howard did. He went to Indiana with some neighbors, found a job; and then came back to Arkansas and moved Bertie, Harold and Harry to a small apartment above a farmhouse near Otis, Indiana where they lived until finding a house to rent in Otis. Otis was small; it had a few homes and two stores, one serving as the post office as well as store and tavern. Harry remembers living in the little apartment, and he said: Some of our neighbors from Arkansas also had rooms next to us in that farmhouse. My uncle by marriage, his brother, and a nephew shared a room so they could save as much as possible to take back to their homes and families in Arkansas

Five-year-old Harry would visit his uncle’s place any time he could. I was a pest,he says. They must have been pretty tired of me running over there all the time, and one day one of them was trying to scare me with a broken electrical cord he had plugged into an outlet, and somehow accidentally burned a hole in the mesh of the screen door. The sparks flew, and so did I. I think he got into a little trouble with the landlady, but doubt he cared; he got rid of my visits.

He also tells of Bruno, the grown son of the couple who owned the apartment. Bruno used Skoal snuff, Harry says, and I kept begging him to let me try it. One day he did. I got so sick that over fifty years later the smell of Skoal turned my stomach.

Dad worked construction jobs, and eventually we moved to a house out on a country road not far from Otis, and lived there until my senior year of High School in 1965. Mom and Dad found a house they wanted near Waterford, IN and bought it that year.

After graduation, Harry worked at Bethlehem Steel, then went to another factory as a shipping clerk. In 1966 he joined the Army Reserves, and got married just before going to basic training. After returning home, Laura was born to Harry and Suzanne in 1968.. By then Harry was working as a salesman for a home movie systems company, and later that year Harry and Suzanne separated, and eventually divorced. During the time with the home movie company, they had gone to Victoria, Texas, and after moving back to Indiana for 5 years; Harry returned to Victoria ,started and ran a small sign shop there until 1994.

While painting signs in Victoria for mostly local customers, he painted a large graphic for the local Domino’s Pizza franchisee. At that time, there was only one painter in the country approved by the ad agency handling the Domino’s account. The local franchisee helped Harry become approved as the second painter, and that led to travel to Washington State, Montana, Louisiana and Mississippi. Eventually other painters were approved, and the travel stopped. Naturally, much of the local business he had built went elsewhere during the long trips, so he returned to begin rebuilding what he had lost.

During that time, a friend in the convenience store auditing business approached Harry to do some mystery shops for one of his accounts. This involved posing as a customer, making a small purchase, then writing a report on the transaction.

I told him he should get some wineo to do the shops. The whole thing sounded like a waste of time to me. He said he had found a wineo , and how quick could I start. The account turned out to be the management company that handled the corporate Chevron stores. My friend and I formed a partnership, and ran this business for 3 years until a change in Chevron management, and cutbacks on their part lost the account. While doing it, though, I traveled from Kentucky to Virginia, then down through Georgia, and finally down the Atlantic side of Florida to Key West, then up the Gulf side, and back to Texas to shop Houston and Dallas. The route was done every three months.

After the loss of Chevron he moved to the land his parents left him in Arkansas for 2 years, then took a job with a company that had been a competitor in the mystery shopping business. This required moving to the St. Louis, MO area where he married Audrey, the music director of the church he attended. He is now a truck driver, and lives in the St. Louis area. His daughter Laura and grandson Dylan live in Indiana not far from where the family first settled in the 1950s
