South Crosby Line

This Crosby group originally settled along the east coast, SC, NC, GA etc. and may or may not be directly related to Simon Crosby, the immigrant from England who settled in the upper northeast part of America, MA, NY etc. and for that reason we refer to them as the Southern Crosby Line.

THERE IS STATED TO BE A DENNIS CROSBY WHO INHERITED ABOUT 150 ACRES OF LAND ON BEAVER CREEK, ALONG WITH SLAVES, ALONG WITH THE STATEMENT HE WAS THE SON OF ALLEN CROSBY, BUT THE ALLEN CROSBY NOW LISTED IN THE FAMILY TREE PROGRAM DOES NOT LIST A DENNIS CROSBY AS A SON. 8/5/1998–HRG: IN THE PUBLICATION ” A HISTORICAL SKETCH OF PEOPLE, PLACES AND HOMES OF BULLOCKS CREEK, SOUTH CAROLINA “; WRITTEN BY REV. JERRY LEE WEST, PUBLISHED BY CHESTER DISTRICT GENEALOGICAL SOCIETY, RICHBURG, S.C., : PAGES 47 AND 67, SHOWS THAT THE BLAIRSVILLE POST OFFICE HAD THE FOLLOWING POSTMASTERS: ALLEN CROSBY, APPOINTED MARCH 8, 1834. WILLIAM CROSBY, APPOINTED JULY 8, 1852. JOHN S. CROSBY, APPOINTED JANUARY 15, 1858.

ON PAGE 67, IT IS STATED THAT AFTER THE DEATH OF ALLEN CROSBY, WILLIAM CLAWSON WAS DIRECTED BY THE COURT OF EQUITY TO DISPOSE OF CROSBY’S ESTATE IN THE CASE OF JAMES S. HEMPHILL AND DENNIS CROSBY vs. NANCY M. CROSBY, DENNIS CROSBY AND OTHERS. PART OF THE ESTATE WAS EXPOSED TO PUBLIC SALE ON OCTOBER 4, 1847. A DR. HICKLIN PURCHASED 9 ACRES OF A HOUSE TRACT FOR $189. THE DEEDS RECORD THIS AS ” THE DAVIS LAND “, AND DESCRIBED IT AS BEING BOUND ON THE NORTH BY DENNIS CROSBY (FORMERLY THE LANDS OF ALLEN CROSBY , ON THE SOUTH AND SOUTHWEST BY JAMES R. GILLESPIE AND ON THE SOUTH AND SOUTHEAST BY DENNIS CROSBY. (BOOK O, PAGE 582 ).

IN JANUARY OF 1848, DR. HICKLIN PURCHASED 272 ACRES OF THE WILLIAM JAMISON ESQUIRE’S (DECEASED) PLANTATION WHICH ADJOINED THE ABOVE TRACT AND WAS SITUATED ON QUINN’S ROAD (BOOK O, PAGE 490).

IN MARCH OF 1856, REV. RUSSELL PAID $200. FOR HALF OF THE “JAMISON TRACT”.

ON THE HOUSE, IT WAS LIKELY BUILT IN 1832, THE DATE SHOWN ON THE CHIMNEY. IT WAS LIKELY BUILT BY ALLEN CROSBY, AND WAS USED AS THE HOMESTEAD FOR THE CROSBY FAMILY. IN 1834, ALLEN CROSBY WAS APPOINTED AS POSTMASTER OF BLAIRSVILLE … JUST TWO YEARS AFTER THE HOUSE WAS SUPPOSEDLY BUILT; IS IT POSSIBLE THAT IT WAS THE SITE OF THE LOCAL POSTOFFICE? IT IS KNOWN FOR CERTAIN THAT IT WAS LOCATED IN THE RIGHT FRONT ROOM OF THE HOUSE WITH SARAH N. RUSSELL APPOINTED AS POSTMISTRESS ON JANUARY 17, 1881. THE POST OFFICE CONTINUED TO JUNE 30. 1903 WHEN IT WAS CONSOLIDATED WITH SHARON. (THE PURPOSE OF THIS DISSERTION IS TO SIMPLY TRY TO ESTABLISH ANY RELATIONSHIP TO OUR ALLEN CROSBY.). NOTE THAT THE LAND IS REFERRED TO AS ” THE DAVIS LAND”. ALLEN’S FATHER THOMAS CROSBY WAS MARRIED TO MARGARET DAVIS, AND COULD HAVE BEEN PASSED DOWN TO OUR ALLEN CROSBY.
